Larry Miller

Larry Miller is a longtime union and community activist, educator, writer, and former elected school-board member. Over the course of his working life, he belonged to eight different union locals, including AFSCME, the Machinists, Steelworkers, Teamsters, the Transportation Workers Union, and the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association.

His path into education was unconventional. Miller was laid off when he was in his late 30s and went to college afterward, earning his degree as an adult. I haven't found a reliable source yet that identifies the specific college or degree, so I would not put a school name on the Hard Ball Press site unless we can verify it. He subsequently became a high-school teacher with Milwaukee Public Schools, where he taught for 17 years.

He went on to become a longtime editor at Rethinking Schools, a publication focused on progressive education, and served for 12 years on the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. More recent biographies describe him as a retired history teacher.

Miller and Ellen Bravo drew on approximately five decades of organizing and workers' rights experience to write Standing Up: Tales of Struggle, published by Hard Ball Press in 2022. The novel centers ordinary working people confronting workplace injustice, organizing unions, navigating relationships and oppression, and fighting for change.
